The much anticipated and one of the biggest fashion events in Nigeria- Lagos Fashion Week proudly sponsored by Heineken is set to kick-start today 27th of October, 2021 as the official countdown closed its window yesterday.
Recall that on the 22nd of July, 2021, the organizers of the event- Style House Files took to its official instagram account to announce the return of the event which is slated to hold between october 27th – 30th, 2021 and this garnered lots of likes from lovers of the event with most of them commenting “welcome back” and “we’ve missed you,”.
The event which was founded by Omoyemi Akerele in 2011 could not hold last year due to global Covid-19 pandemic which put the whole world in panic with song of survival being the only song on everyone’s lips.
Since inception, Lagos Fashion Week has continuously celebrated the African heritage and its stupendous craftsmanship that is expressed with a high level of dexterity by African designers annually on its runways in the metropolitan city of Lagos.
For the past decade, Lagos fashion week has expanded its horizon and used its platform and influence to elevate not just Nigerian styles but African styles to the world. The platform has evolved to co-create and collaborate with internationally recognized brands all over the fashion world with key players like Kenneth Ize who has recently emerged with international brands like Italian fashion houses.
The theme of this year’s edition of Lagos Fashion Week #thefuturestartNow which focuses on sustainability and ethical living will be bordering on the future of fashion for the next decade and will be looking to adopt a functional fashion system that delivers environmental, societal, and economic solutions that’s beneficial for all.
The organizers of the Fashion event revealed the core agenda for this year’s Heineken Lagos Fashion Week as follow:
- Building on the sector’s capacity to contribute to Africa’s economy by strengthening existing business(es).
- Reemphasizing our community’s commitment to creating in an ethical manner through sustainable practices with traceability, transparency and longevity as strong pillars of our creative design process.
- Education, by working with key stakeholders across the continent to facilitate access to knowledge acquisition, skills/knowledge exchange and a decolonized curriculum for our schools.
- Technology tools for strengthening our commitment to producing and consuming fashion responsibly on the continent.
- Protecting our artisans and artisanal skills across the continent is fundamental to strengthening creativity.
The designers of this season to exhibit their collections are; Cynthia Abila, Ella & Gabby, Studio IMO, Wana Sambo, Funke Adepoju, Ugo Moye, Toju Foyeh, Belois Couture, Gert Johan Coetzee, VicNate, alongside their muses Angel Obasi, Deola Adebiyi, Wole Babalola, and Abiola Sonaike to mention a few.
This year’s edition of the Fashion event will feature the 3rd edition of the Green Access competition. Green Access is a talent discovery platform organized by Lagos Fashion Week with the vision to encourage designers to create social, economic and environmentally sustainable fashion brands.
The competition which aims to inspire young creatives to consciously begin to explore sustainable ways of achieving their creative goals while simultaneously discovering new talents will have its top 5 finalists commissioned to design a collection that will be showcased on this year’s edition runway.
